Why open source?

Because it is development friendly and does not cost anywhere near as much as proprietry software. Because the windows monopoly is irritating.

Current Partner Organisations

International Textile Garment and Leather Workers Federation

The collective has done several research projects on the garment sector in Southern Africa for ITGLWF, including research on the garment sector in Lesotho and Swaziland, and we are currently working on a research project on second hand clothing in eight African countries.
The Collective has produced several popular booklets on campaigns and educational booklets on organising, negotiating, collective bargaining and recognition agreement procedures. We have also facilitated the ITGLWF SADC Affiliates Strategic Planning Workshop and produce the quarterly ITGLWF newspaper, ITS Africa News.
The collective is currently producing an information system and electronic library linked to a website to host research and other information that will be of use to unions in the regions.

IRENE

Irene is a Dutch based organisation that campaigns on global human and worker rights. They have commissioned the collective to produce a series of booklets for garment workers and their trade unions in Africa on the global supply chain and strategies to deal with multinationals.

SOMO

SOMO is a Dutch based research organisation that investigates multinationals. The collective has done several projects with SOMO including research on the Garment sector in Malawi. We have also partnered with SOMO on a FNV funded research project in Africa and will be conducting research on labour law in the countries under study.

Solidarity Centre

The collective has produced an analysis of available information and research on the garment sector in seven African countries for the Solidarity Centre to inform the roll out plan for a joint project with ITGLWF on Sweatshops in Africa.

Centre For Civil Society

The Collective led the writing team in the production of course materials and provided facilitation for the Research and Analysis Skills Strengthening Programme providing research skills and grants to activists throughout South Africa. We also edited and produced the manual and workbook and are currently supervising seven research projects under the RASSP project.

Ditsela

The Collective has done material development and training on research core skills for the Ditsela Danlep project in 2003. Together with Naledi, the Collective has began a research course for the Danlep project that will run until February 2005.

International Metalworkers Federation

We are currently developing materials for and will be facilitating a strategic planning process for IMF Southern African Affiliates.
